August 2 - December 18, 2010 Online Course

This comprehensive program prepares registered nurses to apply for national certification as a COCN (Certified Ostomy Care Nurse) through the WOCNCB. Didactic content, assignments, examinations, and course evaluations are presented in an asynchronous, online format presented sequentially over 8 weeks. Teaching methods include lectures, demonstrations, case studies, simulations, web-based resources, readings, written assignments, and interactive discussion questions. A special feature of this course is that students in the program can interact with faculty on a daily basis.
Although this online course offers students the convenience of learning at home, it is as demanding as a regular class. Students should be prepared to spend 10-12 hours per week on readings, assignments, and other course activities. Each week, the class focuses on a new module, with corresponding activities and quizzes. Interaction and participation is also monitored to ensure that students benefit from the knowledge and experience of colleagues in diverse locations and practice settings.
Content includes:
Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems; assessment and management of stomas, continent diversions, and fistulas/tubes, including issues across the life-span and common complications; components of specialized nursing practice including role development, research utilization, legal and ethical issues, professional leadership, and cultural competency; patient education related to self-care, resources, community referrals, and adaptations for resuming optimal life-style.
Clinical Experience & Preceptor Requirements
A valuable component of the program is a minimum of 40 hours of precepted clinical experience and the requirement to meet minimum performance levels and critical skills related to basic ostomy, fistula, drains, and tube management. The preceptorship is with a WOCN-qualified preceptor in two clinical settings. The preceptorship is to be completed following the online didactic component between October 11 - December 17, 2010. Preceptors guide students in gaining knowledge in the role of an ostomy care nurse. Ongoing coordination between the faculty, student, and preceptor will occur to monitor the student’s progress.
Students are responsible for making all preceptor arrangements once they are accepted into the course. The UW OMEP co-directors are available to assist students with preceptor selection. Some preceptors charge for their services. The fee should be negotiated and transacted directly between the student and the preceptor and is not included in the course fee.
Course Requirements & Evaluation Procedures:
In addition to the 8 weeks of online learning and clinical sessions, students are expected to complete assigned readings, exams, projects, and professional enrichment activities. This online course is structured on an asynchronous interactive learning model. Students are graded on projects, quizzes and tests. Clinical performance is evaluated as pass/fail based on input from clinical preceptors. Completion of the program is contingent upon satisfactory performance of the online and clinical components.
Price: Entire Course: $3295/$3295*

This comprehensive, intensive program addresses a broad range of wounds (venous, arterial, neuropathic and pressure ulcers), healing problems (wound infection, failure to heal), and components of specialized nursing practice (role development, collaboration, research utilization, providing in-service education). Central concepts guiding the content and practicum experiences are prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of the healing process. Exposure to and experience with therapies such as topical treatments, ABI and compression therapy, and debridement are included.
Format:
The program begins with 6 weeks of web-supported learning activities to be completed prior to attending class in Seattle. Students will access content online and should be prepared to spend 10-12 hours per week on reading assignments, quizzes, and other course activities during the web-supported phase of the course. Course faculty will be available to support student learning. Following the web-supported phase, students will attend 14 days of intensive classwork in Seattle with additional lectures, reading assignments, projects, clinical experiences, and testing.
Preceptorship: An important aspect of the program is the pairing of students with preceptors who are certified in wound care. Preceptors guide students in gaining knowledge and expertise in the role of the certified wound care nurse in various health care settings (acute care, long term care, home health). Five precepted clinical days and selected clinical observations are arranged for all participants within the on-site phase of the course.
Course Requirements and Evaluation Procedures:
In addition to the 6 weeks of web-supported learning and all scheduled classroom and clinical sessions, students are expected to complete assigned readings, exams, projects, and professional enrichment activities. Students are graded on projects and tests. Clinical performance is evaluated as pass/fail based on input from the clinical preceptors. Completion of the program is contingent upon satisfactory performance of the on-line, classroom and clinical components.
WOCN Program Accreditation
This program is accredited by the Wound Ostomy and Continence
Nurses Society (WOCN). Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to take the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board exam for certification as a wound care nurse (CWCN).
