Saturday Morning Workshops (8:30-11:45 am)

AM1: Fundamentals of12-Lead ECG: Part 1
Suzy Meader
This workshop presents the fundamentals of dissecting the 12-lead ECG. Focus is on changes in various waves and segments that identify axis, atrial and ventricular hypertrophy and bundle branch blocks. Content includes patterns of ischemia, injury and infarction, strips of WPW, pericarditis, hyperkalemia and long QT interval. A systematic approach to analyzing a 12-lead ECG with practice strips is used. Prerequisite: Learner must have SOLID basic skills in reading ECGs. May be taken alone or in sequence with PM1.

AM2: Uterine Blocks, Biopsies and IUDs: What's a Cervix to Do? (Rx=3.00)
Robert Smithing, Bethany Rolfe Witham, Madeline Wiley, Christine Hoyle, Nancy Lawton, Tara Cardinal
Participants learn correct methods for administering a cervical block, inserting the five currently available IUDs (Paragard, Liletta, Mirena, Kyleena and Skyla) and matching the most appropriate IUD to patient needs. In addition, instructors discuss the use of a tenaculum, os dilators, sounds and endometrial samplers to do a gentle insertion. This workshop uses a combination of images, video, lecture and practice on synthetic models. Limit: 40.

AM3: Identifying Patients at High Risk for Breast Cancer (CANCELLED)
Erin Chaney

AM4: Evaluation and Management of Orthopedic Issues in the Shoulder, Knee and Ankle (Rx=3.00)
Jennifer Carrol
Taking a great history is paramount in any patient interaction. In this hands-on, musculoskeletal workshop, we'll delve into how the mechanism of injury offers up substantial clues that guide your examination. Participants will learn and practice the physical examination skills necessary to effectively evaluate patients presenting with MSK complaints involving the shoulder, knee and ankle. You will learn to apply joint specific special tests to augment your exam to enhance the accuracy of your diagnosis and treatment plan. Further, the speaker will cover 'not to be missed' red flag signs and review when imaging is necessary or augmentative. Dress comfortably for class participation.

AM5: Diabetes: Up-to-Date Pharmacotherapeutic Management Strategies with Emphasis on Non-Insulin Therapies (Rx=3.00)
Jamie Haraden
With 100 million U.S. adults now living with diabetes or prediabetes, having the fluency to understand who you are seeing and how best to help them manage their disease burden will have a lasting and positive impact. This workshop will review the accuracy of the diagnosis - making sure you do not miss adult onset type one diabetes. Heavy emphasis will be on understanding the medical management strategies available. We'll look at new evidence that supports the choice of one medication over another; how to titrate and follow patients' toward goal; second best choices due to financial constraints or barriers; (if time) starting insulin. Method of instructions will include case studies. Bring a patient case to discuss. Include age, gender, med list, last labs (HGB A1c, creat/GFR, microalbumin), problem list and med history list.
