Nurse prepares I.V. drip.This I.V. Therapy Skills Lab is a four-hour, in-person, simulated hands-on training session with an I.V. Therapy qualified instructor. Content includes a brief review of the I.V. Therapy Program online coursework, question and answer session, demonstrations and hands-on skills practice with a peripheral and central station. A lab kit is provided as part of the registration fee. Enrollment is limited and preregistration is required. 

Prerequisite: You must have completed all requirements of the I.V. Therapy Online Program before attending this skills lab. Please bring a copy of your 30-hour certificate with you for verification.

Afternoon Lab Schedule: 1:15 - 5:30 PM
1:15Welcome and overview of the skills lab
1:25Review and Q&A of online coursework
2:15Demonstration and discussion of peripheral I.V. catheter insertion and I.V. push medication administration
2:45Hands-on skills practice related to peripheral I.V. catheter insertions and I.V. push medication administration
3:45Demonstration and discussion of central venous catheter (CVC) dressing change and blood draw from a CVC
4:15Hands-on skills practice related to CVC dressing change and blood draw from a CVC


Objectives for Learning Outcomes

After completing this skills lab, you will be better able to:

  • Demonstrate the proper steps for insertion of a peripheral I.V. catheter.
  • Implement safe I.V. push medication administration techniques.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedural steps for a central venous catheter dressing change.
  • State the rationale for discarding "waste blood" when drawing a blood sample from a central venous catheter.
