The Myth of Holiday Suicides


Get suicide prevention training at UW Continuing Nursing Education.You may have heard that suicide rates increase during the holidays. But that statistic is, in fact, a myth. Here are some suicide statistics that aren't urban legend: 

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death. 
  • There is a suicide every 15 minutes.
  • 22 veterans die by suicide each day. 
  • 40% of those who attempt suicide have seen a primary care provider within a week of their attempt.

Chances are in the span of your career, you’ll encounter a patient experiencing suicide ideation. Will you know what to say? Will you know what to do? Are you comfortable asking the question: 

"Are you thinking of ending your life?"

Suicide Prevention Training can eliminate myths and misconceptions around suicide and give you concrete strategies for helping a patient.
