Course image of Successful Wound Care.This online education series addresses current scientific, clinical and professional practice issues related to chronic wounds including evidence-based and multidisciplinary strategies for assessing and intervening to achieve successful outcomes. Teaching methods include lecture, discussion, demonstration and case studies.

This series was recorded in November 2011 at a conference for healthcare professionals provided by Continuing Nursing Education at the University of Washington School of Nursing. Course format includes video presentations and handouts.

Publish Date: August 1, 2012. This course will be available for three years from this date.

Learning objectives

After taking this activity set, you will be better able to:

  • Describe key roles that growth factors, proteases and extracellular matrix molecules play in regulating normal wound healing and contributing to wound chronicity.
  • Describe bacterial causes of tolerance to antibodies, antibiotics, antiseptics and disinfectants and how to practice biofilm-based wound care.
  • Describe clinical characteristics and evaluation of leg ulcers caused by systemic disease (vasculitis, vasculopathy, etc).
  • Discuss the benefits of and approaches to debridement for managing bio-burden and infection and for jump-starting angiogenesis and improving tissue perfusion.
  • Describe the assessment and management of high risk foot issues and related complications for patients with diabetes.
  • Discuss multiple considerations and expanded modalities for effective off-loading.
  • Discuss the impact on wound healing of glycemic control and nutrition.
  • Discuss approved indications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO).
