Specialty Program 2022 | Foundations for School Nursing

Foundations for School Nursing provides relevant, skills-based education for anyone interested in school nursing or working in schools. The course is taught within a flexible, virtual learning environment, made with busy working people in mind. Participants will also have a variety of opportunities to connect with and build local professional networks. 

Foundations for School Nursing provides relevant content for and is open to all pre- and post-licensure healthcare professionals and educators interested in school-based health. The course has been approved by the Professional Education Standards Board (PESB) to meet the course requirement for ESA Certification.


Students will connect virtually in small facilitated groups called Hubs throughout the quarter to synthesize their learning, ask questions, share expertise, and network with colleagues. You will find more information about Hub Meetings under the "Program" tab.

This course is offered in partnership with the School Nurse Organization of Washington (SNOW).

Target Audience

Current and prospective School Nurses, as well as other professionals interested in working in schools.

Objectives for Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of this program, participants will:

  1. Develop knowledge of pediatric individual- and population-level health issues and interventions
  2. Develop knowledge of managing common pediatric acute and chronic conditions in schools
  3. Build skills and confidence to provide evidence-based care to youth in schools
  4. Learn current approaches to addressing health inequities in the school setting

Foundations for School Nursing will primarily consist of flexible self-study modules, with 24/7 access! Pre-recorded lectures and virtual hub meetings will total a time commitment of 3 hours per week, with additional brief readings and assignments to support and synthesize participants' learning.

Faculty will host a virtual Kickoff meeting on Monday, February 7th from 5 to 6:30pm. This will be a chance to meet each other and get oriented to the course!

Students will also attend Hub Meetings via Zoom in small facilitated groups five times during the course to synthesize and discuss course content, ask questions, and engage with case studies. These meetings will occur in the evening every other Wednesday, from 5 to 6:30pm, on the following dates:

  • February 16th
  • March 2nd
  • March 16th
  • March 30th
  • April 13th

Faculty will additionally hold optional Zoom Office Hours every Monday evening from February 14th through April 11th, 5 to 6:30pm, where all students are welcome to drop in, ask questions, and connect!
